The four most important Google tools for job applicants
Grow with Google recently organized a webinar to train people on how to enhance the job search experience using a variety of Google Tools. Some of the things that were emphasized include the need to use Google Drive to save important documents like different types of resumes and an online tracker of the different roles applied for.
A job seeker can first of all use Google Search to narrow down the job search to a specific geographical area like say Nairobi. This can be done by just using the keywords "jobs near me" while searching on Google. The search terms can be modified to suit various interests and preferences. An example would be to search for "Accounting Jobs in Nairobi." Google will provide search results related to only accounting jobs in Nairobi. A sample search result for a specific job query is shown below.
NB: Note that you can create job alerts for specific search results as well as modifying the search results (filtering) into various job types, date posted, titles and locations.
Google sheets helps a job seeker to track the various roles applied for by periodically updating as and when one applies for a job. This is useful because sometimes candidates apply for many roles but are unable to even review the outcomes about their search experience. It is also worth mentioning that sometimes a candidate has to apply for many roles in order to qualify for one.
Google Docs provide resume templates which can be edited to suit a job seeker's preferences. They also allow a person to have a variety of templates that can be customized for different roles. They are also useful in helping a candidate to share with a friend or colleague who can review and advise on improvements or adjustments before one eventually shares either a cover letter or resume with a prospective employer.
Lastly, a job seeker should also know how to effectively use Google Meet especially to practice for interviews and for formal interviews. A person should ensure that they engage in a Google Meet virtual meeting in a room that has good lighting and a comfortable sitting environment. This is especially relevant since most of the interviews for various open positions may be conducted via Google Meet and other virtual meeting platforms as a result of the covid-19 pandemic.
